Pentagon Claims PFAS Use Necessary for National Security

Officials say the attempt to restrict “forever chemicals” would impact the production of weapons, uniforms, and other defense items.

Officials with the Department of Defense recently informed Congress that the elimination of per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) would undermine military readiness. Federal agencies have been proposing the restriction of these “forever chemicals” which have been found to cause health issues, such as cancer, and the inability of the substances to break down in the environment.

The Pentagon has defended the use of the substances for military technology and electronics, as well as in weapons and textiles, claiming that such restrictions would impact national security.

The Defense Department reported, “DoD is reliant on the critically important chemical and physical properties of PFAS to provide required performance for the technologies and consumable items and articles which enable military readiness and sustainment.”

Officials added, “Losing access to PFAS due to overly broad regulations or severe market contractions would greatly impact national security and DoD’s ability to fulfill its mission.”

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For members of Congress as they consider the ramifications of federal restrictions of PFAS.
  • For federal agency leaders as they seek to eliminate the forever chemicals to reduce illness and toxicity.
  • For Pentagon officials as they make a case for the use of these substances for national security.
